His leadership drove the creation of the Addiction Psychiatry Division, and since 2007, he has served as Director of the Addiciton Psychiatry Fellowship – the second-largest program of its kind in the United States. In 2016, he established the department’s first substance use disorders clinic, which also became UT Southwestern’s first-ever specialized treatment program. His efforts to train others to use buprenorphine and other medications in treating opioid addiction have not only saved lives but expanded access to care across Texas and beyond.

Whether guiding patients through recovery or mentoring future psychiatrists, Dr. Wakhlu brings a rare combination of clinical expertise, compassion, and tireless advocacy.

In his words: “Today I am truly honored to receive this recognition. I want to express my gratitude to the team of nurses, clinic staff, trainees, and colleagues who have supported me. I dedicate this honor to my patients, who have taught me the true meaning of strength and resilience in the face of social stigma and emotional turmoil.”
